Lucky Bamboo is probably the coolest little “pot plant” out there. Bright green and twirling, I think that having this on your coffee table is something that will start a conversation.

Of course, nobody’s going to say no to good luck, so Lucky Bamboo will not go wasted. Along with your Money Tree (the famous Pachira Aquatica), this could bring you health, wealth and happiness. If you win the lotto after buying one, I hope you’ll pop by and say thanks…

Pachira Aquatica – Money Tree

The Pachira Aquatica money tree plant is a plant/tree that will do any new home-owner proud.

Pachira Money Tree Plant

Also known as the “Pachira Aquatica“, the Money Tree is a very hardy tree that can vary in size from small Bonsai to 7 feet tall… It will grow in lots of light AND low light. Being well watered, or not very well watered (though don’t OVER water it).

Because of these features, this plant can be an indoor house plant, as well as a tree kept at the office.

Money Tree Origin

There are some interesting theories on where the Money Tree got it’s name from. The most common is due to the fact that it has five leaves on each branch, symbolising the 5 fundamental Feng Shui elements : Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth. The tree is also very commonly found to be made up of 5 intertwined trees. Since this kind of plant symbolizes good wealth, nowadays, people believe not only it brings green color into your room, but also bring luck and fortune to any household, business or people you care.

It is currently quite a popular tree, and some websites are selling this tree along with the other popular Feng Shui plant “Lucky Bamboo”.

Caring for the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree

Keep the soil/potting soil slightly dry. Too much water is not good for this plant.
If possible, add some river sand to the soil to help with the drainage.
Keep the tree in medium light. It can stand sunlight or shade if it has to, but for optimal growth, a bit of both is recommended.
Prune the large leaves if you would like a lot of new leaf growth. Of course, this is not really necessary unless you have inherited a tired looking tree.

I FULLY recommend reading some Feng Shui websites to see where to place the money tree plant. You don’t have to “believe” in it, but things like that originate from somewhere, and Feng Shui is just one of the oldest forms of Interior Decorating. Size isn’t everything

Just because you have a small house or apartment, doesn’t mean you can’t have a christmas tree… I know a lot of people would sacrifice a lot of space to have a large Christmas Tree, but this is also not necessary. The tree doesn’t have to be large. Take a look at this tree:

As you can see, this tree is spotted by everyone who comes in the front door, and the fact that it’s small actually adds to it. I would recommend getting a small Fern (this one is a Goldcrest) as they are easy enough to look after, and you don’t have to uproot them every christmas.

Make your Christmas Tree the feature it should be, and let it add to your Christmas decorations, being a decoration itself.

If this is too late for this Christmas, well, there’s always next year.

Pot Plants – Indoor Plants

Another good idea for making a place look more lived in is to add a few pot plants. Of course, don’t go adding plants that your gran would have added (assuming you are not a gran). Some indoor pot plants that can be really nice (and, once again, cheapish) are cactii (cactuses), or similar plants.

The BEST thing about a cactus is, you don’t have to water it everyday, and they can withstand quite a lot. Which can be a good thing if you want to put one on a window sill in the bathroom.

Some other cool indoor plants are:

Herbs – Can be useful at a later stage if you like the idea of using fresh, home-grown herbs for cooking
Aloes – For example, Dwarf Aloes.
Bonsai Trees – Careful, these need quite a bit of care, especially if you want it to “grow” properly and in shape.

Another thing about potted plants is, when you buy the plant, you might need to re-pot it. One way you can tell is, if the pot is really small, and the plant’s roots seem to be struggling for space, then you will need to put the plant in a bigger pot. Of course, a big reason for repotting a plant is to put it in a nicer flower pot, one that may be more suited to your home…
